DX Intersection is a vital and preeminent annual fundraising event for Design Exchange that is anticipated and attended by hundreds of art, fashion, design and philanthropic guests. Each year, DX celebrates a Canadian individual or partnership that exemplifies creativity, outstanding talent, and innovative vision.

This year, Design Exchange celebrates Tyler Brûlé, a Canadian journalist and entrepreneur based in London, UK, who has risen to international acclaim and influence. Tyler Brûlé’s work demonstrates the intersection of design disciplines and shows how design informs contemporary culture and lifestyles.

Without realizing it, most people have a close relationship with Tyler Brûlé and his body of work. Wallpaper* magazine, and more recently Monocle magazine have played a significant roll in how design and culture is consumed.

The DX Award honouring Tyler Brûlé mimics the physical form of these publications, the link to Tyler’s influence on his readers and culture at large.

These documents of cultural musings occupy space in many homes, sitting in tall piles on our shelves, tables, and book shelves.

Made from a repetitive application of 4” x 4” Corian® panels, the form mimics the physical stacks of these publications envisioned and brought to life by Tyler Brûlé. The form slowly tapers to a cylindrical shape, adding a dynamic quality to the form, and improving the tactile quality of the award.

Thom Fougere (1987) studied architecture at the University of Manitoba before working in furniture and product design. In 2011, after his studies in Architecture, he was appointed Creative Director of Canadian furniture design house EQ3 at the age of 24. There he initiated a rebranding of the company including a transformation of the product line, graphic design, photography, interiors and the architectural design of stores. Thom Fougere continues to investigate how we live and interact with objects in our homes, creating pieces that are both subtle and archetypal in form.
